About Christchurch 4ED (4th Edition)

Christchurch and Canterbury are on a transformative journey as the region recovers from significant natural disasters, including earthquakes, wildfires and floods. The cities, towns and even highways are being rebuilt. As each year passes, more significant landmarks reopen after extensive repairs. The Kaikoura Earthquake in 2016 dramatically changed the geographic layout of the South Island and scenic coastal road forever.

The Christchurch 4th Edition book is in production over the summer months of 2023 – 2024.

Christchurch 4ED (4th Edition) documents the city’s rebuild and transformative journey over the past eight years, and beyond.

The Canterbury region of New Zealand, was devastated by violent earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, and Kaikoura in 2016. The Port Hills were scarred by wildfires in 2017. Despite these disasters, the region remains a beautiful part of the world.

As a result, the Central Business District (CBD) of Christchurch was hit particularly hard was hit particularly hard by the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Many of the buildings had to be demolished, leaving blocks of land empty. In the outlying towns of Sumner, Lyttelton, Akaroa, Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Kaikoura many landmark buildings were also damaged beyond repair.

Eight years later, the rebuild is starting to progress, with people returning to new offices and shops in the Central city. The Arts Centre and other landmarks are reopening after extensive repairs. Life is slowly returning to a new normal in many parts of the city and suburbs.

Christchurch 4ED is a “then and now” comparison book. It guides you on a visual journey around post-earthquake Christchurch, Sumner, Lyttelton, Akaroa, Darfield, Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Kaikoura. You can see how the city and outlying towns are beginning to rebuild from the disasters and the impact upon the landscape caused by earthquakes, wildfires and flooding.

We are starting production now!  Due for release in February 2024.

Like other small businesses who rely on the tourist industry, our income was severely impacted by the coronavirus emergency.  Furthermore, other events outside of our control had forced us to delay completing the photography and production of the 4th edition.

The good news is that we are committed to producing this edition for February 2024.

PRE-ORDERS ARE WELCOME

We have a number of pre-orders already, and are committed to delivering them in due course.   While we won’t know the finished price of the book until closer to release time, we will keep the book at the same price as advertised.   Note:  we intend to use an overseas-based print on demand service, which can ship directly to customers on our behalf.

Estimates for on-demand-printing with drop shipping indicate that we will make an extremely small profit-margin (if any) on the book (excluding any of our other production costs).  However, if you pre-order a copy now, we will keep the price the same regardless of where the book is being shipped to.

Note: This pre-order price includes shipping to all addresses, if we use the print-on-demand platform.
