Christchurch’s Cathedral Square Then and Now. View the similarities and differences from before the 2011 earthquake to last year. We came across these two images in our image library today and thought we’d share them with you. They give you an opportunity to see the changing face of this New Zealand City. Portions of these …
Christchurch photos show the changes over the years of this New Zealand city. Such as how the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes impacted the city. The February 2011 violent Christchurch Earthquake caused significant damage to buildings in Christchurch. As a result, a large percentage were demolished in the following years.
Author and photographer, Deb Donnell, documents the city’s transformative journey. Her Christchurch photos are compiled in the Christchurch Then and Now series. In addition, she draws on collections from other photographers to document history.
For instance, in the Responders book, the Volunteer Response Teams share their photos. The book documents their deployments to Christchurch after the earthquakes.
Further books are in production. They include photos from last century. The city’s urban landscape continually changes. Demolition and rebuild is part of every day life. As the city grows, it transforms. It evolves. And it grows.
Photos are the visual story. Taken years apart, you can easily observe the changes. However, buildings are the shell and framework to stories. They shelter and protect the people within. The buildings are also the backdrop. Photos including people show the fashion and culture of the times. They give a sense of society. Our photographers focus on documenting more than brick and mortar. They capture values, beliefs, and significant moments in history.

Most importantly, our photos are a visual record. One that is suitable for your personal library. To display on a coffee table. Perhaps to give as a gift. Finally, as an essential piece of memorabilia about Christchurch, New Zealand.
